Poem: The Son is Watching

The Son is Watching
A poem to my son, Tommy
by M Ray Holloway, Jr.

Leaning against your doorway,
I watched you sleep last night.
Somehow the world seemed different;
The days all seemed so bright.
The fears we had were faded now;
The dreams had all come true.
The stars were just within your reach,
And the sun was watching you.

I could never take you through all your pains;
There are things that a man cannot do,
But you'll be strong,
And carry on,
'Cause the Son is watching you.

Watching you from the hallway,
Tomorrow seems so far to go,
Yet somehow the days will slip away,
And be gone before we can know.
Where will you find your first heartache?
Will I know how to carry you through?
Maybe it will help to remember then
That the Son is watching you.

I could never take you through all your pains;
There are things that a man cannot do,
But you'll be strong,
And carry on,
'Cause the Son is watching you.

Standing alone in the darkness,
Tomorrow calls softly and low.
With steps like a man you slip off once again;
You'll be gone before ever I know.
Puppies and toys and those little boy curls
Moved aside as the child quickly grew.
I can only hope that you heard me say
That the Son is watching you.

How can I watch as you walk away?
Some things a man just cannot do,
But you've been so strong,
So I will carry on,
'Cause the Son is watching me, too,
And the Son ever still watches you....
